Opened in 2014, the Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre (NCS) has established a reputation as being one of the best sixth form centres in London and the UK. Its aim is to provide outstanding A-Level education for able students from across the borough and East London.
The College is currently based in the former Grade II listed Technical College, Town Hall and Library. As a result of its recent academic success, student admission numbers are to be expanded by 200 and the former Police Station is being proposed for new NCS teaching accommodation.
Our emerging proposals include a conservation-based refurbishment of the Grade II listed building together with a new two-storey classroom block linked by a dining hall set within the existing courtyard. The currently unused building will be brought back into life with all key historic features retained and a new stair and lift added in order to improve accessibility.
The new building is designed as a compact extension positioned on the site to allow the back of the listed building to ‘breathe’ and to provide a pleasant setting for the dining hall to spill out. The new construction will touch the 1904 building lightly with top lit glazing.
The project is designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent.
