Harrow School Shepherd Churchill Dining Hall

As part of the Harrow 450 development programme which will transform the School’s estate, this project remodels and extends the existing 1970s Shepherd Churchill Dining Hall to provide improved dining and catering spaces, to rationalise the internal layout and to enhance the building’s setting within its landscape.

Our proposals extend the host building, itself a winner of a Civic Trust Award, with two separate but related additions.  A main entrance infill extension improves circulation for the 840 pupils down to the main dining hall level.  This in turn is extended to capitalise on impressive views over the School playing fields towards central London.  The extension also screens the essential plant and service yard below from views from the adjacent the listed Harrow Park to the south. A new stair and lift core provide level access and better flexibility.

The new interventions provide crisp modern counterpoints to the traditional host building which in turn with be enhanced with new elegant windows, glass balustrading and a landscaped roof terrace. The interiors will be transformed with brighter lighter finishes and fittings, new lighting, improved movement flows and stunning views out.

The design will significantly improve the environmental performance of the building – with a target of 35% betterment over the baseline Part L requirements.
