4,750sqm of new build accommodation provides drama, dance and lighting design studios, a digital arts suite, library and workshops for a theatre college in Sidcup, Kent. Set within beautiful historic parkland with existing listed and significant new buildings, we re-structured the overall site layout to create a ‘walled’ garden, using buildings to enclose new courtyard spaces.
Coloured panels enliven the courtyard facades whilst the outer facades are more muted, providing a coherent outer face to the park. Internal spaces are deliberately simple to allow the students to inhabit and personalise them for performance and creative expression. Finishes are robust and there are framed views through generous openings to the parkland beyond.
"A scheme that, notwithstanding its disparate architectural heritage, has integrity, elegance, functionality and beauty."
