A two storey bookend to an existing 1960s refectory building provides a new kitchen at ground floor level and corporate meeting rooms above. An east facing roof projection within the parapet walls provides clerestory light into these rooms. The composed exterior of the new building rationalises previous disparate piecemeal additions. The dining hall has been enlarged and remodelled to allow direct access to outside space. Natural light is brought deep into the servery by a series of frameless rooflights set within a linear slice of the ceiling. Stainless steel counters faced with walnut panels set against blue hygienic wall coverings complete the fit-out. The construction works were successfully phased in order to keep the University’s catering services operational throughout the project.
