Rivington Street Studio was appointed in 2007 to prepare a masterplan for the development of the Northampton Square Campus which consists of a series of concrete framed buildings from the early 1970s, a Grade II listed Victorian building and some high quality recent additions. The vision for the masterplan is to provide a clear strategic framework for the creation of high quality teaching and learning space to enhance the student experience into the 21st Century, complemented by good social spaces and a robust modern campus infrastructure.
Positive qualities are identified and enhanced with coherent solutions proposed to resolve issues such as messy circulation and zoning and poor public image. The study has been wide-ranging including the re-modelling of the existing building stock, re-zoning and consolidation of functions and investigation of the potential to expand the campus by positive interventions in the existing fabric and sensitive redevelopment of some strategic sites. It has led to the production of a Planning Brief in partnership with Islington Council and involved extensive public consultation.
