Beatrice Tate Special School is an essential education and care facility for pupils with severe learning difficulties in Mile End, Tower Hamlets.
Our brief has been to produce an integrated scheme for the expansion of the school to increase capacity up to 135 pupils. The extension is to provide six classrooms for 48-60 pupils as well as adjoining support rooms including group rooms, accessible WCs and hygiene rooms.
A significant proportion of the students have additional sensory and physical impairments. The school works in partnership with nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy services and the local authority’s peripatetic teachers for the hearing and visually impaired.
The project is targeting BREEAM Excellent and seeks to replace the school’s existing gas-fired boilers with air source heat pumps. The electrification of the school’s heating source helps to reduce the council’s dependency on fossil fuels.
