Rivington Street Studio was commissioned by Gordonstoun in 2019 to produce a Masterplan which reflects the School’s vision as a world leader in character education. The Masterplan aims to enhance the green infrastructure, to reflect the school’s beautiful location in Moray, to improve the built environment, and to encourage collaboration and interaction.
The Sixth Form Centre and Business and Enterprise Centre follows the recently completed Queen Elizabeth II Rooms in its massing and materiality to deliver high-quality new spaces for within the Masterplan’s Classroom Village
Alongside classrooms, break-out areas, offices, and support spaces, a spacious multi-purpose hall serves as the building’s focal point, This space will accommodate the sixth form’s needs during the academic term, host the summer school’s activities throughout holidays, and serve year-round events for the local community.
An external deck surrounds the multi-use hall; direct access provides spill-space for gathering and social interaction. A swale to the south-east will provide a green focus which enhances biodiversity whilst also providing a sustainable drainage system (SuDS). New landscaped pathways and a raised walkway traverses over the swale area connecting the new building to the heart of the campus.
Like the Queen Elizabeth II Rooms, it will be at the forefront of new sustainable teaching and learning spaces across the UK. The proposal employs multiple sustainable strategies including PVs, Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) and a hybrid of natural and mechanical ventilation.
